Christchurch isn't cold! Queenstown is almost at the very bottom of the island and the climate there is totally different!
Queenstown is great i think for snowing, skiing and holidays in general but there are a lot of tourists there. My best friend was born there but her family moved when it started to become a major tourist attraction.
Christchurch- yeah why not. Its not as fun and exciting as Auckland or Wellington though. But flat lands and less populated. Less congestion on the roads too! Weather is cold in winter as expected and hot in summer...normal ?
Wellington- i love Wellington! If i wasn't living in Christchurch i would move to Wellington- my father is working there at the moment and I get to visit him during the school holidays. The times where i have been up to Wellington, its always been windy!
Auckland- its the super city- closest you will get to say... New York..Sydney, Melbourne - you know those big cities. Auckland has more opportunities and is most culturally diverse in my opinion and therefore most accepting. (lots of immigrants come arrive in auckland and then end up living there). Weather- warmer than all the other cities, humid.

I live in Christchurch and the weather you'll get used it. It's not that bad actually, it's only cold during winter, but in Spring and Summer the weather is always really lovely. So I'd reccomend either Christchurch if you want to live in a bigger city, because it's beautiful and has everything you need without being overcrowded or unpleasant like Auckland. Plus the people are really nice.
Or else, Queenstown, it's close to many beautiful places e.g. Arrowtown or Wanaka which would be handy when you go on holiday. It's also a bit smaller than the main cities but because it's a huge tourist destination it does have everything you'd find in the main cities. The only thin about Queenstown, is that it's much more expensive to live in.
As for Wellington...I don't like it, even though I was born there. It's quite a dull city, I prefer Dunedin to it.
Auckland...I also don't like but it's handy because most major national events or concerts are in Auckland. But for quality living, I'd say Christchurch (if you want to live in a big city -- that's not full) or Queenstown (if you want a city-like town, that's really beautiful and spacious). Both places are beautiful all year round.

Auckland is known for having "four seasons in one day"- basically, it can be raining one minute, sunny the next, windy an hour later. But it has the mildest temperature of all the major NZ centres. It sometimes gets to 30 degrees in summer, and never goes below about 5 in winter.
Wellington is the windy city- it is not especially cold as such but the wind makes it cold!!
Christchurch is a really beautiful city, but it can get pretty cold.
Queenstown is quiet a touristy town, due to it being by the mountains- needless to say, it can get pretty freezing there!

Everyone's idea of "ideal" weather is different. Anyway is that all that matters - what about a city's character and lifestyle.
Auckland would have the warmest average temperature throughout the year if that is what you are looking for.
