Most people tend to think that the South Island has the most pretty scenery, BUT having said that, the North Island has a lot of great things to see. There is a greater population in the North so there are more cities/towns and there is a lot more cultural things there as well.
The main cities that people go to are Auckland, Rotorua, Christchurch and Queenstown. They all offer a lot of good things to see and do. The South Island is the most mountainous and least populated.
It depends on what you like to see and how much time you have.

The country has a lot of worthwhile tourist spots spread out over both islands--if you have the time visiting both islands is worthwhile. Personally I think that the country's most spectacular scenery is concentrated on the south island, but there's good stuff all over.
